ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥'s presents Vienna Choir Boys
One of the world's oldest musical organizations, the Vienna Choir Boys, will be featured by the University of Louisiana at Monroe Concert Series Thursday, Feb. 10. The production will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Monroe Civic Center Theatre.
Internationally renowned for their exceptionally beautiful singing and unique charm, the ensemble performs a broad repertoire that ranges from sacred music and oratorios to operettas, traditional Viennese waltzes and folk songs from around the world.
Established in 1498 by Imperial decree of Habsburg Emperor Maximilian I, the Vienna Choir Boys were founded to sing sacred music for the monarchy in the Imperial Chapel. Originally, the Choir began with 12 members and were considered part of the broader Imperial Music Chapel through four centuries of the Habsburg dynasty.
Today, the ensemble consists of four separate groups of 24 members each, ranging in age from 10 to 14. Often, two of the groups are on tour simultaneously, with at least one choir remaining in residence in Vienna to perform the weekly services at the Chapel and to sing at the Vienna State Opera. The Vienna Choir Boys have visited the United States more than 60 times since their first tour here in 1932.
