Monroe will be host to a unique cultural event this weekend when the Heritage of India and the Indian Students' Association of the University of Louisiana at Monroe will be celebrating Diwali, the Festival of Lights. The celebration will be held this Saturday, October 21 at Ouachita Parish High School, off Millhaven Road.
There will be a classical Indian dance performance starting at 6.30 p.m. followed by a banquet of Indian cuisine, at 8.15. The event was originally scheduled for the Brown Hall complex.
For ticket information, please call 651-0002. Dinner by advance reservation only; dance tickets will be sold at the box-office( $10 adult, $5 student ).
Heritage of India is a non-profit organization of Indians in the Twin Cities whose mission is to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of India for the benefit of its membership and for the education of the people of Louisiana.
The entertainers are from the Anjali Dance School of Houston. Rathna Kumar, who is the artistic director of this school, is not only an artiste of acknowledged excellence in the 2000 year-old tradition of Bharathanatyam, a highly stylized classical dance art of Southern India, she has also trained in Western ballet for a cross-cultural experience. She has choreographed and presented several performances in collaboration with dance schools of other cultural traditions.
India's of Baton Rouge will be catering the banquet, which will feature Moghlai Indian cuisine, known for it's creamy, spice-enriched sauces and curries. This would be a rare chance to witness the color and pageantry of an Indian festival right here in Monroe.
