Louisiana creole Poet-Scholar to speak at ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥
The ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Department of Foreign Languages announces a public lecture by Louisiana Creole poet and scholar, Dr. Deborah Clifton. "Applications of Creole Studies in Louisiana" is the name of her program. Dr. Clifton, from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, will speak on Monday, Oct. 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Conference Center located on the seventh floor of the ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Library.
Dr. Clifton's most recent volume of poetry, A cette heure, la louve, makes use of Creole, standard French, and English in a narrative that moves between everyday experience and fable, literature and oral tradition, Anglophone American culture and the francophone Caribbean.
In her doctoral research Dr. Clifton treats storytelling and myth as forms of therapy, and develops a culture-specific approach to health care planning within minority communities. This presentation is made possible through a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. It is open to the general public and all are welcome.
