ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ University-Wide Convocation And Grovestock 2002
The University of Louisiana at Monroe announces the first ever University-Wide Convocation, a celebration of the opening of the academic year. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 20th at 4:00 p.m. in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Immediately following the Convocation will be GroveStock, a celebration of food, music, and fun for all.
At the Convocation the Class of 2006 will receive recognition for their dedication to academic excellence in choosing ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥, the new faculty members will be introduced, and the University's new alma mater will be unveiled. The Sound of Today Marching Band will be on hand to play the alma mater and other music as well. Each student will be given a bookmark, bearing the new words of the alma mater to commemorate the occasion.
The ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Student Government Association President, Charlie Cheatham, said, "This will be a great way to get the school year going. There are so many people on campus involved with this effort like President Cofer; Athletics Director, Bruce Hanks; Miss ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥, Rachel Lowe; the ROTC Color Guard as well as various faculty members and students. We want the new freshmen and returning students to be excited about coming to the revitalized ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥."
The freshmen, or Class of 2006, will proceed in to the Coliseum and be seated on the floor along with the band. The crowd will hear remarks from the Athletic Director, SGA President, Miss ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥, Professor Paxton Oliver, and President Cofer.
"GroveStock is a celebration of ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Spirit. Musical entertainment will be provided by 'The Word', a contemporary R&B group that has toured the college market for the past seven years, and by 'The Shack Daddies', an up and coming rock band from Baton Rouge. Student Organizations will be there along with a variety of games including volleyball, horseshoes, bungee run, laser tag, the joust, and an obstacle course. Come celebrate the beginning of a new school year with your fellow faculty, staff, and students," said Duke Johnson, Office of Campus Programs.
Several other activities are being planned for students during the beginning week of classes. For more information, please call the Office of Student Development at 318-342- 5287.
