ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Holds Summer Socials For Alumni And Friends

"Join hands and spread the word" might well be the theme for the Summer Socials being held for University of Louisiana at Monroe alumni and friends, hosted by the Athletic Scholarship Foundation and the Alumni Association. The highlight of these summer socials will be ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥'s new president, Dr. James E. Cofer Sr. "There is no doubt that our friends want to meet and visit with Dr. Cofer and hear his message about the university," said ASF President Mickey Bennett. "He is definitely an excellent ambassador for ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥."

With all summer activity pointing toward the climatic Annual Barbecue set for Aug. 27 at Fant-Ewing Coliseum, the area get-togethers have been extremely successful. "We had a great time in Winnfield thanks primarily to the efforts of Lawrence White who made all the arrangements," said ASF Executive Director Larry McDonald. "It was the perfect example of how much can be done in our area communities when someone grabs hold of the rope and takes charge. Lawrence has always been that person in Winnfield and we are grateful for his efforts." Farmerville, under the leadership of Robert Earle, held its annual golf-dinner July 30 at Darbonne Country Club and it is always one of the highlights of the summer socials.

The August schedule begins with an August 8 social and dinner at the Bastrop Municipal Center at 6 p.m. under the direction of committee head Kinny Haddox and Representative Charles McDonald. On August 15 a golf-dinner affair is set at Rayville's Boeuf River Country Club with Angela and Myrt Hales and Theo Coenen heading up the work force. Frank Maxwell of Delhi is working on the golf event, a 4-person scramble starting at 1:30 p.m. at Beouf River. The CenLa social will be held August 16 at 6 p.m. at Alexandria's Cabrini Catholic Church Activity Center and promises to be a great event thanks to the work of committee heads John Wells, T.J. Shuflin and Kurt Oestriecher. A
golf scramble is also on tap at Alexandria Country Club beginning at 1 p.m. The CenLa affair is also featuring the dynamic cooking duo of Don Weems (barbecue) and Jeff "Country" Davis (fish fry). Davis is a graduate of ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ and was a member of the ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ 31ers, a student service organization, where he worked under Weems, former ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Alumni Director.

Alumni Director Pam Shepherd said, "It has been fun and rewarding to work with the Athletic Scholarship foundation on our summer events. We are all in the business of spreading the word about our university and it certainly works better when our outreach divisions work together."
