ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Professor Receives Fellowship in Poetry

Dr. Claudia Grinnell, director of the English Writing Center and assistant professor at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, recently received a Louisiana Division of the Arts Fellowship in Poetry.

Grinnell's work is receiving recognition as being among the state's best work in poetry. The fellowship comes with a five thousand dollar award. Grinnell submitted twenty-five poems to apply for this fellowship.

Receiving this award means a lot to the professor. "I am so thrilled. It is a great honor and a boost spiritually," Grinnell said.

The Louisiana Division of the Arts Website states: "Artist Fellowships are cash awards in recognition of artistic excellence. They recognize and award the artistic achievements of Louisiana's exceptional individual artists. Fellowship awards are made through a highly competitive process, and are based primarily on artistic excellence. It is the intent of the Division of the Arts to acknowledge distinguished fellows of the highest artistic caliber in each discipline of the arts."

Grinnell is very active at ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ as the assistant editor of "turnrow," a literary journal, and as web mistress for the magazine. She is also active online with "QED Poetry Journal" and is a published author. Her books include "Conditions Horizontal," and "The Hayflick Limit." Grinnell is currently working on her third book that has a working title of "Off Course."

Some of Grinnell's other honors include Instructor of the Year (2003) in the Department of English; Finalist, Ann Stanford Poetry Competition (2003); and winner of the Southern Women Writers Emerging Poets Award in 2000. She has her masters in English from ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ and her Ed.D. from Grambling Sate University.
