ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Small Business Development Center hosts workshops

The ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ SBDC is hosting a variety of free workshops that help small business owners become better managers and to keep them informed about current events and changing trends in today’s business world. Interested ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ students are encouraged to attend these upcoming workshops.
 
Business Basics/Recordkeeping/Employment Tax, Part I*

          Tuesday, Sept. 5, 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
 
          ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Administration Building, Room 2-105          
 
Part I of this workshop provides an introduction to business tax fundamentals, highlights tax benefits and obligations, and employer tax responsibilities.  Topics include the basics of preparing your business tax returns; withholding and estimating federal taxes; employer’s tax responsibilities for employees; completion of and compliance with forms related to employment taxes; pros and cons of sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations; records you need to keep and how good records benefit your business; etc.  
 
 
Business Basics/Recordkeeping/Employment Tax, Part II*

          Tuesday, Sept. 12,  5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
 
          ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Administration Building, Room 2-105
 
Part II of the workshop will explore selected topics in federal taxes for your small business.  This workshop includes a discussion of tax laws, common IRS schedules, business deductions, and tax computation for small business owners.  Topics include preparing the Schedule C (sole proprietorship) tax return for your small business; tax laws affecting individuals and small businesses; home offices, depreciation, car expenses, travel, and other allowable deductions; how to handle capital gains, wages, and special situations related to business ownership; etc.  A representative from the Department of Labor will discuss labor issues of importance to small business.
 
*In partnership with the Louisiana Society of Enrolled Agents (LSEA), a member of LSEA will present the workshops.  Each speaker has volunteered to present these workshops and is enrolled to practice before the IRS.
 
 
Social Security Tax Year 2006, Wage and Tax Filing Seminar

          Tuesday, Sept. 19, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
 
          ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Administration Building, Room 2-105          
 
The seminars will benefit the business or company payroll person who is responsible for Annual Wage/Tax Reporting (Form W-2, W-3, and SSN verification).  Employees who enter names or Social Security Numbers into the payroll system should also attend the seminar.  
 
Some of the topics to be covered at the seminar include changes in reporting for tax Year 2006, ways to report W-2’s, advantages of electronic filing, ways to avoid errors (and the penalties that go with them).
 
The Social Security Administration is presenting this seminar; Don Carroum, Social Security Administration will speak.  
 
 
Evaluating and Financing Your Business Idea

This two-hour workshop is recommended for individuals who are interested in determining the feasibility of their idea, are planning to start or have recently started a small business, want to expand their business, are interested in obtaining a small business loan, or want to learn more about planning and management.  
 
Topics include business feasibility, business planning, business description, marketing strategy development, financial planning, loan process/applications, and sources of funds for small business start-up and expansion.

Pre-registration is required.  To pre-register for any of the workshops, call the ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ SBDC at (318) 342-1224.  Please arrive 10 minutes ahead of time scheduled for registration.
