ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Counseling Center offers support groups to university students and employees
The University of Louisiana at Monroe Counseling Center offers a variety of support groups, workshops and individual sessions to ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ students and employees. Though primarily a student-focused facility, it also assists ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ faculty and staff as scheduling permits.
In addition to an afternoon Grief and Loss Support group that began June 22 (Thursdays, 1 p.m., in the Counseling Center Conference Room), two new support groups will begin in July:
Grief and Loss Support Group  Evening Session
Dates: July 6, 13; Aug. 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31
Time: 5:30 - 7 p.m.
Location: ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Counseling Center Conference Room
Description: An 8-week support group for those working through the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, a relationship, a way of life, or any other major loss. Topics include sharing loss, the tasks of grief, coping strategies (both healthy and unhealthy), identifying the impact of the loss, identification of unresolved issues, development of a plan to resolve conflicts, and saying goodbye.
Stress Management Support Group
Dates: July 6, 13; Aug. 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31
Time: 7:30 - 9 p.m.
Location: ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Counseling Center Conference Room
Description: An 8-week support group for those who are experiencing anxiety and who wish to find alternative ways of coping.
- Topics include identification of thoughts, behaviors and emotions that maintain anxiety
- Use of various therapies to change thinking and behavior, including Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Reality Therapy and Relaxation techniques to reduce stress and anxiety (includes deep breathing, deep muscle relaxation, visualization exercises, mindfulness exercises)
- Exploration of any difficulty expressing emotions in an open, honest and assertive way.
- Methods of self-nurturing and self-soothing.
The Counseling Center offers the following support groups based on interest:
- Anger Management
- Depression
- Grief and Loss
- Recovery Support Group (for anyone overcoming or suffering from any addictive or compulsive behavior)
- Stress Management
- Veterans
