Dean Carlos Fandal returns to classroom
While Carlos Fandal has enjoyed his tenure as ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ College of Arts and Sciences dean, he has decided that it's time to return to "what is truly close to the heart of all academic professionals: students, research and professional service."
Fandal, who has served as dean for the past 13 years, will teach full-time in the foreign languages department. Fandal values the mission of the College of Arts and Sciences and feels his decision will encourage continued progress in the university.
"A College of Arts and Sciences defines the quality of an institution. If I have contributed in some way to the quality of our College of Arts and Sciences, I am happy. One should not keep decanal positions indefinitely. A university needs and thrives on new visions. This is especially true for a College of Arts and Sciences."
Fandal has been a true asset to the college, said Jeff Galle, head of the English department. "Dean Fandal is one of the most personable, likeable people I have known, and as a dean this personality trait translates into his being one of the very best at keeping the peace in a very large college."
A committee, chaired by a dean and composed of students, faculty and department heads, will soon be appointed to conduct a national search for a replacement dean, Associate Provost Eric Pani said. Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences Mark Arant is serving as the interim dean.
Fandal's replacement will follow a legacy, President James E. Cofer, Sr. said.
"Carlos Fandal has served the university and our students ably for many years. He leaves very big shoes for someone to fill. Luckily for them, Carlos is staying on as a professor and can share his wisdom with the new dean."
Looking ahead to his future in the classroom, Fandal commented, "If my future is as good as my past here, I have a lot to look forward to."
