ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ to unveil new mascot logo in mid-June
After the ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Mascot Committee and President James Cofer endorsed the Warhawks on April 5, ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ has been steadily working with Eric Rickabaugh of Rickabaugh Graphics on a new mascot identity. ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ is now finalizing the designs and will unveil the new logos in mid-June.
Rickabaugh visited ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥'s campus several times. He toured the campus and surrounding area, worked with an appointed logo advisory committee and met with focus groups. The focus groups were composed of 80-100 staff, faculty, alumni, donors, community members, students, prospective students and children. Rickabaugh incorporated that feedback into various logo designs, which incorporate both aviation and bird imagery.
So far, community involvement has been positive, said Kevin Stuart, director of marketing at ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥. "I know many people are excited about seeing the designs. Most were very eager to participate in the focus groups and pleased that the university was, once again, turning to the ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ family for advice and input."
Warhawk has local historical connections to the P-40 Warhawk Airplane, flown by Northeast Louisiana's General Claire Chennault and the Flying Tigers during WWII. The P-40 Warhawk was the first American plane to break the 300 MPH mark, was rugged, and could withstand heavy punishment.
The Warhawk identity also includes hawks, a fierce bird of prey, indigenous to this area and often seen on ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥'s campus. The hawk symbolizes courage, speed, power and vision.
