SGA announces award winners
President and Mrs. James E. Cofer, Sr., recently hosted the annual SGA Awards meeting May 3 at their home on Milton Street in Monroe.
The SGA honored the following ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ outstanding students, faculty and alumni selected by the Spring 2006 Senate:
Dr. Mark Arant, associate professor of chemistry and associate dean of arts and sciences, received the ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Faculty Award of Excellence.
Rob Carroll, president-elect of the SGA (2006-07), received the Melvin Rambin Backbone Award.
Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity received the ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Organization of the Year award, marking its third consecutive win. The organization has won a total of four such honors in the awardÏ€s 5-year history. Stephen Douglas, president, and Tommy Walpole, advisor, received the honors on Pi Kappa Alpha's behalf.
Kayla Haltom, a former SGA president and vice president, a former AOPi (Alpha Omicron Pi) president and a graduate assistant in athletics, received the Don Weems Alumni Award.
Mallory Soileau, a pre-physical therapy major with a 3.55 GPA, received the Deborah Cofer Most Involved Female Student Award. Soileau is the ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Dance TeamÏ€s captain for 2006 and is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, CAB and the PREP Staff.
The Dr. Wayne Brumfield Most Involved Male Student Award went to Matthew Sewell, a PharmD major with a 4.0 GPA. He is also the SGA senior class president and a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Lambda Delta and the American Pharmacists Association; a Mortar Board member; president of Rho Chi (a pharmacy honorary organization) for 2005-06; and recipient of the SGA Golden Arrow Award, 2005.
The Nick Lassiter Most Outstanding SGA Senate Scholar Award went to Rob Carroll, SGA president-elect with a 3.9 GPA. He is also the winner of the 2005 English Essay, "Milton, Liberty, and the State." Carroll was a speaker for the Louisiana Political Science Association: "Comparative Analysis of Intellectual Property Issues in the Middle East." He also serves as a musician and Mortar Board president.
SGA Senate Awards of Excellence were given to Chase Snyder, SGA department chairman for judicial affairs, elections commissioner and mediator for SGA; and to Brady Middleton, SGA sophomore class president and assistant to the SGA president for 2006-07.
Heather Brandle, SGA vice president for two years and an accounting graduate, received the SGA Executive Officer of the Year Award. Included in her background are an EDS company interview in Dallas, a balanced managerial style and a keen sense of fair play.
The James E. Cofer, Sr., Golden Arrow Award went to Kyle Gallman, the SGA president for 2006. He has a 3.7 GPA in the College of Arts and Sciences and will attend LSU Law School in the fall 2006 semester. He has also served as an administrative liaison with ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ administration, faculty and students.
