Bry Art Gallery exhibiting “Momentum”

The Bry Art Gallery is currently showing “Momentum,” a one-person exhibition of original prints by internationally known printmaker, Fulbright scholar and Guggenheim Fellow, Ed Smith of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

On display are 60 etchings and monotypes, ranging in size from intimate to large format, and that conceptually deal with the human condition.

The physically larger works are in the eight monotypes of his “Republican Landscapes” suite, which is the artist’s reaction to the tragedy of 9/11.

Smith pays homage to the historical artists Callot and Goya in a suite of 25 small etchings dealing with man’s inhumanity to man. In a larger formatted suite of seven Blue etchings, Smith reprises the imagery of Callot and Goya in sinister monochromatic tones. The 20 Tondo etchings are the most ambitious suite, wherein the artist has combined 312 different plates in a juxtaposition concerning human emotions.

After installing his exhibition at Bry Art Gallery, Smith spent several days on campus where he delivered a formal gallery, held dialogues in classrooms and evaluated the portfolios of upper division students.

Smith’s exhibition will be on view through Tuesday, Nov. 21. The Bry Art Gallery is open from 8 - 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 - noon on Fridays. It is free and open to the public.
