English professor encourages community outreach
Sandra Hill, assistant professor of English, is taking her students outside of the classroom. Hill’s technical writing students are reaching out to the community through service-learning projects in collaboration with the Northeast Louisiana chapter of the Red Cross, the Food Bank, Louisiana MENTOR, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and The Humane Society of Monroe.
In the ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ community, the students will assist with the environmental initiative Adopt-a-Spot and will work on health issues in collaboration with the Activity Center.
Of the outreach, Hill said, “Service-learning work gives students an opportunity to understand and participate in civic activities, learn about their community, and practice the theories and skills of their academic courses through real-world, hands-on projects. The work strengthens relationships between the university and the community.â€
