Toxicology department to host conference
The ۽ֱ Department of Toxicology will host the annual meeting of the South Central Chapter of the Society of Toxicology (SCCSOT) on Oct. 12 -13. The SCCSOT is the regional chapter of the national Society of Toxicology and includes scientists from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and western Tennessee.
Kenneth L. Hastings from the U.S. FDA will present a discussion on “Predicting Cardiotoxicity: Two Case Studies.” Hasting’s talk is open to the public and is free of charge and will be given in the ۽ֱ Conference Center at 7 – 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12.
The annual meeting will be attended by more than 50 members, many of whom are graduate students that present posters and platform talks on their latest research. Topic areas include effects of environmental and food contaminants, such as pesticides and Superfund chemicals, and overdose of pharmaceuticals on a wide range of adverse health outcomes, for example, asthma, cancer, cardiovascular, kidney and liver disease.
A satellite session for area high school science teachers and guidance counselors will be held concurrently with the Friday afternoon activities to introduce them to the science of toxicology and acquaint them with career opportunities in the field.
