ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ says goodbye to Indian mascot and welcomes Ace
On Aug. 31, shortly before the kick-off in the game against Alcorn State in Malone Stadium, ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ retired the Indian mascot, but the history of the mascot, which has represented ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ for 75 years, will always be the identifier for several generations of ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ alumni, the announcer told the crowd.
Accompanied by the Sound of Today and a cheering crowd, the Indian mascot rode his horse to midfield, along the 50-yard line to the sideline and stopped near ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ President James Cofer, former president George Walker and ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Alumni Association President Bart Dornier. The Indian mascot presented his headdress to Walker, who led the university from 1958-1975. Walker then presented the headdress, which will be kept on permanent display in the Anna Gray Noe Alumni Center, to Dornier.
The crowd continued to stand and cheer as the Indian mascot left the field.
Soon after, Ace the Warhawk led the football team as fireworks shot into the air.
The stands were filled with an astounding 18,106 people, many of whom were wearing new Warhawk gear. The game (ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ won 24-6) ended with a fireworks display.
