Warhawk Way sign unveiled Aug. 21

ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ President James Cofer, Ace the ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Warhawk and Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo will unveil the new Warhawk Way sign during a brief presentation Thursday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ and the City of Monroe worked together to rename Stadium Drive: Warhawk Way. Stadium Drive is owned by the city of Monroe. In a unanimous vote of 5-0 on June 24, the city council agreed to rename the street.

ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Athletic Director Bobby Staub appreciates the efforts put forth by the city council and the mayor, a ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ alum who received a business administration degree in 1979.

"We are grateful to the mayor, city council, and Stadium Drive residents for supporting this initiative.

"With the overwhelming excitement over our new mascot, we continually look for opportunities to promote the Warhawk brand. At many institutions, streets that transverse athletic facilities have athletic references. It was suggested that renaming Stadium Drive to Warhawk Way would be a great opportunity to further market our mascot."

Students are excited about the name change. ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥'s quarterback Kinsmon Lancaster of Shreveport said, "This university has really shown its love for the Warhawks, and, as an athlete, changing the name of the street to Warhawk Way makes playing football for ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ that much more fun."
