Kappa Delta Sorority’s Shamrock 5K/1 mile Run to prevent child abuse scheduled for Feb. 23

ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥â€™s Kappa Delta Sorority will host a Shamrock 5K/1 mile run Saturday, Feb. 23 from 8:30 – 10 a.m. at Kiroli Park to benefit the many children in the northeast Louisiana community who are victims of abuse and neglect.

In Ouachita Parish, there were reportedly more than 618 disclosed cases of child abuse and neglect in 2006 alone.

The registration fee is $21 for non-students and $16 for ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ students before Saturday, Feb. 16. Afterwards, the registration fee is $25 for non-students and $20 for ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ students. The registration fee includes a T-shirt, refreshments and other prizes. Registration will be available on-site beginning at 7:30 a.m. Applications may be picked up in and returned to the ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Office of Student Life and Leadership (in the Student Center), or to Amy Robinson in the ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Office of Recruitment and Admissions (Sandel Hall).

Eighty percent of the proceeds collected will remain in Louisiana, benefiting Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana, Northeast Region. The remaining 20 percent will go to Prevent Child Abuse America, the sorority’s national philanthropy, for nationwide public awareness programs. The sorority will join thousands of Kappa Deltas across the country to raise funds to benefit the local affiliates and chapters of PCA America.

According to recent PCA America statistics, the number of children abused or neglected in the United States grew by 33 percent to reach a level of 3,244,000 in the last decade. Confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect were estimated at more than one million in 1999. Three children die each day from abuse or neglect in the United States.

Founded in 1897, Kappa Delta Sorority began supporting PCA America in 1981, and began the nationwide Shamrock Event in 1983. More than $6 million has been raised through these events to benefit child abuse prevention efforts across the country.
