ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ history department educates local students on the ancient Egyptians
On Friday, April 3, University of Louisiana at Monroe Professor Monica Bontty, Ph.D., and graduate student Christopher Fleming of Monroe spoke about ancient Egyptians to 20 students in the Avid Program at Ouachita Junior High School.
The students learned about Egyptian religion, mummification and the ancient Egyptian language; they expressed particular interest in the process of mummification. Bontty brought along a life-size mummy and demonstrated the process of mummification, including removing the brain through the nasal cavity. Students also learned greetings and basic conversation in ancient Egyptian. Several also had their names written in Egyptian hieroglyphs.
On Saturday, April 4, Bontty and ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ history instructor Laurie Walker took a group of 50 students on an excursion to Poverty Point. The trip was sponsored by the Ancient World Association, a student organization devoted to travel and research.
