ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ awards degrees to Fall 2009 graduates
The University of Louisiana at Monroe will hold its 2009 Fall Commencement on Saturday, Dec. 19, as ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ President James E. Cofer Sr. confers degrees to new graduates of the university.
Several honor graduates will be recognized during the ceremonies. They are designated as summa cum laude (3.900-4.000), magna cum laude (3.750-3.899) and cum laude (3.500-3.749).
The commencement exercise keynote speaker will be Elsie Burkhalter, chair of the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors, where she has served for the past 16 years. Burkhalter taught in the St. Tammany Parish School System, and is president of St. Tammany Federation of Teachers and School Employees.
In addition to her duties as an AFT local president, Mrs. Burkhalter also serves as a vice president of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers and is a member of the AFT Teachers program and policy council.
On the national level, she has been a delegate to the Democratic National Convention for the past six years, and has been honored by the Convention for her contributions to her community. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge and a Masters of Education from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.
