ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Water Ski Team dominates at World University Championships

The University of Louisiana at Monroe Water Ski Team decided to up the ante from their 23rd national championship and proceeded to dominate at the World University Championships held in Los Morros, Chile, Jan. 12-15.

ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ had the most competitors and the greatest number of medal winners of any university in the world, according to Treina Landrum, ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Water Ski Team coach and director of Recreational Services.

"Overall, ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ skiers brought home 13 medals: four gold, five silver and four bronze," Landrum said. "These competitors are deeply committed to their sport and have brought great honor to ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥."

ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ skiers won the following medals and places:

Ladies Slalom:
Kate Adriaensen, Belgium - first place (gold);
Alexandra Lauretano, U.S. – fourth place;
Silki De Lacy, New Zealand – 15th place

Men Slalom:
Adam Pickos, U.S. - second place (silver);
Adam Sedlmajer, Czech Republic - third place (bronze);
Martin Bartalsky, Slovakia – fourth place;
Daniel Odvarko, Czech Republic – fifth place

Ladies Tricks:
Lauretano - first place (gold);
Adriaensen - second place (silver);
De Lacy – eighth place

Men Tricks:
Pickos - first place (gold);
Sedlmajer - third place (bronze);
Odvarko – fifth place;
Bartalsky – seventh place

Ladies Jump:
Lauretano - second place (silver);
Adriaensen - third place (bronze);
De Lacy – 11th place

Men Jump:
Sedlmajer – fourth place;
Bartalsky – sixth place

Ladies Overall:
Lauretano – first place (gold);
Adriaensen - second place (silver);
De Lacy – 10th place

Men Overall:
Sedlmajer – second place (silver);
Bartalsky - third place (bronze)

ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ water skiers also competed in the summer and fall of 2011 in other prestigious international competitions, including the 2011 Europe & Africa Water Ski Championship in Skarnes, Norway (results at ) and in the 2011 World Championships in Dubna, Russia (results at

"Sedlmajer is the current Male Overall World Champion title holder," Landrum said.

"The World Championships in Russia this summer had either current ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ water skiers or former ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ water skiers winning almost every event. It was pretty amazing. I would bet that there is no other university out there producing the lion's share of world champions in a single sport other than ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥."
