۽ֱ “Thinks Diversity to Raise Awareness”
University of Louisiana at Monroe marriage and family therapy Master’s trainees would like to invite you to the Culture Connection to “Think Diversity to Raise Awareness” Wednesday, Aug. 1.
A series of presentations will take place each half hour and all are encouraged to join to partake in the larger conversation about diversity related issues.
The student trainees will be from the Special Populations class taught by Dr. Marcelo Polanco, assistant professor of Marriage and Family Therapy at ۽ֱ.
The sessions will take place in Strauss Hall, Room 107 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Attendees may come and go as they please.
Some topics of interest are as follows:
Discrimination against the marginalized and oppressed, including those discriminated against based on gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, disability, religion, marital status, age, education, criminal background, and socioeconomic status.
The presentation will emphasize the importance of values of inclusion and respect for the uniqueness of every person and their social and cultural affinities.
“Who am I?” will cover brief discussion on social and personal biases that many may not be aware of.
Americans with Disabilities, and the challenges this group of individuals face on a daily basis will be covered by the student trainees as well. The presentation will include information on the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), successful individuals with disabilities, and demonstrate how such individuals are human beings capable of living extraordinary lives.
"Unity within diversity" from Paulo Freire will be turned around to reflect diversity within unity, looking for the exception to the stereotypical rule.
“Love is Color Blind” The purpose of this presentation is to bring awareness to the ideals of interracial relationships, homosexuality, religion, and ethnicity in our geographic area and on a nationwide level.
All sessions are free and open to the public.
