ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ Nursing School Program renamed to honor lifelong supporter
Philanthropist Kitty DeGree devotes her life to supporting entities that significantly benefit the community, especially the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
In recognition of her unparalleled devotion, ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ President Dr. Nick J. Bruno requested to change ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ School of Nursing’s name to the Kitty DeGree School of Nursing.
Bruno’s request was approved at the University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors meeting on Monday, June 18, in Baton Rouge.
In his formal request to the board, Bruno wrote, “This honor will recognize a humanitarian of remarkable character and profound generosity. Over her lifetime, Mrs. DeGree has become the largest individual donor to ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ . . . Her generosity has benefited both faculty and students through substantial gifts that have established scholarships, endowed professorships and an endowed chair.â€
During the past 28 years, DeGree’s support of ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ academics has resulted in the creation of signature facilities, including the Kitty DeGree Speech and Hearing Center, the College of Pharmacy Library, and the Kitty DeGree Clock Tower.
Her donations have also supported the University Conference Center and the refurbishment of the former President’s Home into the University House, a facility used to house university visitors.
ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥ bestowed DeGree an honorary Doctorate of Law Degree in 1989.
