Several faculty members in the University of Louisiana at Monroe School of Visual
and Performing Arts will perform this summer at the International Women’s Brass Conference
(IWBC) held on the Northern Kentucky University campus.
Dr. James Boldin, associate professor of music; Dr. Scot Humes, associate professor
of music; Dr. James Layfield, Emy-Lou Biedenharn Endowed Chair in Music; and Dr. Aaron
Witek, instructor of music, will all perform during the conference.
Boldin says of the IWBC, "While the title might suggest that participation is limited
only to women, this is not the case at all. The mission of the IWBC is to educate,
inspire, and encourage women brass players, and membership is open to all women and
men who want to help support this effort."
"Our proposal to perform at this year’s IWBC was selected through a competitive, peer-reviewed
process, and we feel both honored and proud to represent our university on the international
stage."
The group will perform a number of works for brass trio—comprised of trumpet, horn,
and trombone—as well as a work for brass trio with organ, all written by women composers.
Their program will include "Engelberg: Trio for Brass and Organ," by Libby Larsen;
"Three Chorals for Brass Trio," by Adriana Figueroa; "Mañas, Wandl’ ich in dem Wald
des Abends," by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel; and "Trio for Brass," by Lauren Bernofsky.
"All of these works are fantastic, but they are often overlooked in favor of works
by more traditional composers," said Boldin. "We hope that our performance at this
conference will help bring greater recognition and appreciation for them."
