VAPA to host guest artists on trumpet, horn and piano

MONROE, La. — On Sunday, October 30th at 3:00 p.m., the University of Louisiana Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) will host a recital and master class by Dr. Jeremy McBain, Dr. Katherine Carothers McBain, and Mr. Paul Johnston. The trio will perform a variety of solo and ensemble music featuring trumpet, horn, and piano.

Jeremy McBain currently teaches applied trumpet and brass chamber music at the University of Texas at Tyler, and has held positions at Eastern Illinois University, Millikin University (Ill.), and Saint Mary’s College (Ind.). An active freelance trumpeter, McBain was recently appointed principal trumpet of the Texarkana Symphony. He has also performed alongside artists such as Doc Severinsen, Byron Stripling, John Clayton, The Contours, and the late Michael Brecker.

Katherine Carothers McBain completed a doctorate in Horn Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music in 2008, and holds additional degrees from Eastman and the University of Houston. An active performer and recitalist, McBain has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Rochester Chamber Orchestra, Kalamazoo Symphony, Illinois Symphony, and the Round Top International Institute Festival Orchestra. In addition to her post at UT Tyler, she teaches Horn at Tyler Junior College and performs in several local orchestras, including Texarkana Symphony Orchestra, Tyler Civic Chorale Orchestra, and Longview Symphony Orchestra. She has taught at the University level since 2005, having held posts at the University of Rochester, Nazareth College, and from 2007-2015, Eastern Illinois University.

Paul Johnston, piano, is active as a performer, teacher, and composer. He is at home in a wide variety of musical styles and has performed with artists including Clark Terry, Benny Golson, Nancy Wilson, Monica Mancini, and Bernadette Peters. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., he studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at Indiana University, where he earned a Master's Degree in jazz studies, a Performer Diploma in piano, and a Performer’s Certificate. Johnston is Professor of Jazz Studies at Eastern Illinois University, where he directs a jazz band, coaches combos, and teaches jazz piano, improvisation, and arranging. For over a decade, he has served on the summer faculties of the Interlochen Center for the Arts and Eastern Music Camp. He is an alumnus of Ravinia's Steans Music Institute and the Henry Mancini Institute.

Admission to the recital is free and open to the public.
