English as a Second Language

The Department of World Languages offers international students English as a Second Language courses (ESL) to support their integration into the university.

1) Students are required to meet the below minimum language scores for admission.

2) An Accuplacer placement exam will be administered upon arrival for students that are not exempt from ESL courses.

3) Based on the Accpulacer exam scores, students may be required to take the below courses.

4) If the Accuplacer score places a student in ESL 1003, the student must enroll in that course the first semester of classes. ESL 1004 and 1006 may be postponed for one semester.

5) Upon earning a C or better, three hours of ESL 1003 will count as ENGL 1001. All other ESL course credits are in addition to the required courses for semester and degree requirements.

English as a Second Language courses:

ESL 1003 Advanced Structure, Grammar, and Composition- 6 hour course
ESL 1004 Advanced Reading and Vocabulary- 3 hour course
ESL 1006 Advanced Oral Language Development- 3 hour course
Until the students have completed the English as a Second Language requirements, advisers in their major areas and faculty in English as a Second Language will monitor their academic progress.Â
